Genetic tools offer solutions to significant environmental challenges. However, many people wonder about the unintended consequences that can arise from altering our ecosystem. This program will focus on three real, experimental uses of gene editing to improve agriculture, save an endangered species, and revive the woolly
mammoth as a climate-stabilization strategy. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the questions, risks, and benefits of using gene editing technology to address today’s environmental problems.
Gillian McNeil is a genetics specialist and public engagement associate for the Personal Genetics Education Project (PGED) at Harvard Medical School. Gillian creates educational products that reach teachers nationwide and facilitates community programs at venues across New England. She is passionate about communicating creatively and ethically about science. Gillian earned her B.S. in molecular biology and M.S. in healthcare genetics from UConn.
