Program Description

Event Details

Sono Kimono is proud to give this hour long presentation on “A Year in Kimono”, which starts with the history of kimono from its origins to modern day fashion. It will then be followed by a dressing workshop. Participants will get to experience dressing themselves in yukata, the cotton summer kimono popular at festivals and celebrations.

Presenter Robyn Mortiboys began studying Japanese language and culture in high school and college. During the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, Robyn was unable to work full time. She began to study how to wear and style a kimono with a licensed kimono teacher in Japan. Exploring the depth and breadth of the history and culture of kimono, Robyn knew she would want to share these beautiful garments with others. This hobby quickly evolved into a business that includes teaching how to properly wear kimono, but also how to pair pieces with western clothing that is both stylish and culturally sensitive.
