The Belden Forest, next to the Simsbury Library, is one of the oldest forests in Connecticut. In 2019 it was added to the national Old-Growth Forest Network (OGFN) as the Hartford County representative forest. During this talk Dr. Maloof will discuss the forests of Connecticut and how OGFN selects forests for inclusion in the national Network. She will also discuss her book Nature’s Temples, and the evidence that the oldest forests are the most important ecologically. Dr. Maloof is one of our nation’s most knowledgeable forest advocates. There will be time for questions and discussion at the end.
Dr. Joan Maloof is the author of numerous research articles and books, including: Nature’s Temples; Treepedia; The Living Forest; Among the Ancients; and Teaching the Trees. In addition to her research and writing, Maloof founded an organiza ion with the goal of creating a network of protected forests across the US; that organization, the Old-Growth Forest Network, now has hundreds of volunteers and thousands of supporters. Maloof works to educate others regarding the extent and condition of our forests, and to encourage their protection. Her formal education includes a bachelor’s degree in Plant Science, a master’s degree in Environmental Science, and a Doctorate in Ecology. She is a professor emeritus at Salisbury University where she taught Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies.
Hosted in partnership with the Simsbury Land Trust.
